Jewish Burial Grounds

Protecting England's historic cemeteries

Historic England has recognised the urgent need to protect non-Christian cemeteries through designation, local listing and the enhancement of Historic Environment Records.

As part of this initiative, Barker Langham undertook a study to understand the religious, historical and communal values associated with Jewish burial grounds. In consultation with London and Manchester's Jewish communities, we facilitated dialogue on issues ranging from ownership and management, to visitation, access, education and intangible values.

Our resulting report drew together diverse views to provide a solid foundation from which to galvanise support for cemeteries, and instigate an appropriate approach to safeguarding Jewish burial grounds in England.
